A lubricant comprises m-bis-(phenyl-mercapto) benzene and a polyphenyl thioether, a mixed polyphenyl ether-thioether or a polyphenyl or a corresponding composition in which one or more of the cyclic nuclei contains one or more halogen substituents, the composition when it comprises m-bis-(phenyl-mercapto) benzene and a polyphenyl ether contains at least 20% of the former. Exhaustive lists of specific compounds are given which embrace three, four, five and six ring polyphenyl thioethers, three, four and five ring mixed polyphenylethers-thioethers and four and five ring polyphenylethers.
