Headings B1F and B1X. A furnace for exothermic or endothermic catalytic reactions comprises catalyst tubes 11 divided into a number of sectors by radial tube free lanes 14 for distribution of heat exchange medium around the tubes, a heat exchanger 17 disposed outside the furnace corrected thereto by inlet and outlet pipes 16, (18), received in a wider lane 15, a central conduit 19 having a circulating propeller 21 for circulating the heat exchange medium, and a throttle flap 25 controlled by reaction temperature or heat exchange medium temperature for controlling the rate of flow of the heat-exchange medium. A device similar to flap 25 may alternatively be situated in the outlet pipe (18). The operative surface of the heat exchanger 17 may be varied in dependence on the reaction temperature or the temperature of the heat exchange medium.
