A non-chain terminated polyester plasticizer of molecular weight 1500 to 30,000 is made by reacting (a) a mixture of at least two C 4-12 alphaomega alkanedioic acids containing 0-50 equivs. per cent of C 4-6 acids, 50-100 equivs. per cent of C 6-9 acids and 0-50 equivs. per cent of C 10-12 acids and (b) a mixture of at least two C 2-6 alkylene glycols containing 20-80 equivs. per cent of C 2-3 glycols. Up to 25 equivs. per cent of the aliphatic acids may be replaced by phthalic, terephthalic or hexahydrophthalic acids. Examples describe making polyesters by reacting (a) at least two acids selected from succinic anhydride, adipic acid and azelaic acids with (b) two or three glycols selected from ethylene glycol, 1: 2-propylene glycol, 1: 4-butylene glycol and neopentylene glycol. The polyesters are used to plasticize polyvinyl chloride or copolymers of vinyl chloride with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride, employing 30 to 160 parts by weight of polyester per 100 parts of vinyl chloride polymer. Mixtures of the polyester with polyethylene terephthalate of molecular weight 15,000 to 40,000 may also be used. The plasticized compositions may also contain a barium/cadmium salt of lauric acid and an aryl phosphate as stabilizers. |
