An air heating or cooling element comprises two parallel headers (one shown in Fig. 3) interconnected by flow pipes 8 arranged at right angles thereto, each header being formed from two half-shells 9, 10 having sockets 12 for mounting the flow pipes and with sockets 11 for lateral pipe connections which latter sockets have their centre planes forwardly of the centre plane of the associated header so that a nipple, sleeve or the like fitted thereto does not project substantially beyond the outer profile of the respective header shell. The elements may have plates 4, 5, Fig. 16, at either side formed with louvres 16, 17 aligned with each other to assist air flow and may be mounted in a housing 2 mounting a reversible cross-flow fan 27 arranged either below or above the element or the element may form the front wall 21 of the housing. The elements may be fitted into a pipe system, Fig. 18, comprising a cooling unit 34 connected in the system in parallel to a heating boiler 30 with associated pumps 43, 31 and the feed pipes from the boiler and cooling unit to heating and cooling elements through multi-way valves are separate whilst the return pipes are common to both systems and are equipped with stopcocks.
