Hydrophobic synthetic polymers containing polar groups are dyed in a homogeneous solution of dyestuff in an organic solvent which may contain water and during dyeing an agent is added either continuously or in portions which substantially reduces the solubility of the dyestuff and which is compatible (i.e. miscible with water when water is used) with the organic solvent. Preferably, dyeing is effected at the boiling point of the organic solvent and textiles dyed include cellulose di- or tri-acetate, linear aromatic polyester polyacrylonitrile and polyamides, solvents used include acetic acid, ethylene glycol with or without water, water being added as diluent, vat, disperse and metal complex dyes, in solutions of the above solvents being employed.
