Apparatus for detecting solid impurities in liquids contained in ampoules comprises two gratings on opposite sides of the ampoule and an optical system for imaging the lines of one grating on to the spaces of the other whereby refraction of light by the impurities varies the amount of light that can pass both gratings to reach a photo-electric device. Light from a source 1 passes through an adjustable field stop 3 and is collimated by a lens 2 on to a grating 4. Grating 4 is imaged by lens 5 on to grating 6 so that with no ampoule present no light reaches the photo-cell 11. The contents of ampoule 8 are agitated by a magnetostrictive ultrasonic generator 10 and allowed to settle. The output of cell 11 has a D.C. component of magnitude dependent upon strains in the ampoule and an A.C. component if solid impurities are present. An A. C. amplifier 12 responds only to the A. C. component to indicate the presence of impurities.
