Zusammenfassung: | An antiwear additive for fuel and lubricant oil is a blocked polyester of the formula (B)HO-[X-OOC-Y-COO]nXOOC-YCO.R1 wherein n is an integer, suitably 1-25, R1 is the residue of a C1-6 aliphatic alcohol or of a primary or secondary amine, Y is the residue of dioleic acid, and X is the residue of a diol of formula The polyester may be added to e.g. gasoline, kerosine, and gas oils, and lubricating oils, e.g. marine cylinder oils and automotive lubricating oils, especially in conjunction with "overbased" additives, e.g. alkali and alkaline earth metal salts of sulphonic, naphthenic, salicylic acids or of phenols. In the examples a polyester from dioleic acid and ethylene glycol, blocked with methanol is added to a marine cylinder oil containing an overbased calcium sulphonate; wet and dry kerosine; naphthas; and an oil comprising a paraffin base oil, a V.I. improver (a copolymer of vinyl acetate, N-vinyl pyrrolidone and fumarate esters), and detergents (sulphurized barium phenate, calcium sulphonate and polyisobutylene succinic acid amic adduct).ALSO:A polyester is prepared by esterifying oleic acid dimer with an equimolecular amount of a glycol HO-CHR-(-CHR-)-mCHR-OH, where each R is H or a C1- 20 alkyl group and m is 0 or 1, until between 1 and 2 mols of water have been evolved per mol of acid or glycol, and condensing the product polyester with a C1- 6 aliphatic alcohol or a primary or secondary amine, to give a final product HO-[-X-OOC-Y-COO-]-n X-OOC-Y-CO-R1, where X, Y and R1 are, respectively, the residues of the glycol, the acid, and the alcohol or amine, and n is an integer. In the example the glycol used is ethylene glycol, and the polyester is blocked with methanol.ALSO:A polyester is prepared by esterifying oleic acid dimer with an equimolecular amount of a glycol wherein R is H or a C1- 20 alkyl group and m is 0 or 1, until between 1 and 2 mols. of water per mol. of acid or glycol is produced, and condensing the product polyester with a C1- 6 aliphatic alcohol or a primary or secondary amine to give a polyester HO-[-X-OOC-Y-COO-]-nXOOC-Y-COR1 where X, Y, and R are the residues respectively of the glycol, the acid, and the alcohol or amine, and n is an integer. In the example the glycol is ethylene glycol, and the polyester is blocked with methanol. The blocked polyester may be added to hydrocarbon oils as an antiwear agent. |
