A control system for an " on-the-fly " printer receives from a computer 100, binary coded representations of a line of characters to be printed and of the characters on the type carrier, which are stored in respective core stores 12, 35 and read-out, compared 34 to control hammer actuation and rewritten. Reception of a " folding op." signal from the computer causes small-case letters to be printed to be replaced by their equivalent capitals before initial entry into the core store 12, by replacing the second bit of any character whose first two bits are 10, by 1, a parity bit accompanying the character being updated concurrently (Fig. la, top). It is mentioned that more than one bit might be altered and conversion of Roman numerals to Arabic, and foreign letters to English could be accomplished.
