e -Hydroxycaproic acid is extracted, from the wash solutions (pH 4.5-6.5) obtained in the oxidation of cyclohexane with gases containing molecular oxygen at elevated temperature and pressure, with organic compounds comprising water-immiscible aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols, esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids (2-8 C), and saturated aliphatic alcohols (1-8 C), or ketones. The acid includes the mixture of monomeric, lactone and polymeric estolides and examples describe the use of amyl alcohol, 2-ethylhexanol, cyclohexanol, methyl cyclohexanol, cyclohexanone, ethyl cyclohexanone, ethyl and butyl acetates, methyl-2-ethyl hexoate, methyl ethyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone.
