A chain wrench comprising a pair of handle members 4, 10 movable towards one another to cause gripping of a workpiece 44, one of said members having a forwardly extending arm 8 to which one end of a length of chain 42 is attached, the other handle member having a claw 6b which is releasably engageable with the chain to bring the chain into engagement with the workpiece when the handles are moved together. The free end of the chain is received in an off-set recess 60 in the arm 8 when the chain is looped under the claw 6b. The wrench comprises a fixed clamping element 6, a movable clamping element 8 pivoted to the handle members at 16, 18 respectively, one end of a toggle lever 12 being pivoted at 20 to the handle 2 and the other end resting on an adjustable abutment 14. A release lever 28 is provided. In a modification a roller type link chain is attached to a forwardly extending arm integrally attached to the handle 4, the clamping element 8 being provided with the claw.
