Acetylene is separated from air prior to rectification to produce liquid Oxygen in a column 5, 6, Fig. 1, by solidification and deposition on metal gauzes 17 disposed in the annular passage formed between column 5 and a tube 14 and through which passage partly liquefied air passes after traversing a water and carbon dioxide ice collecting gauze 8 cooled by oxygenrich liquid passing down a cage of ducts 2 depending from the evaporator 1. In operation air at substantially atmospheric pressure enters a housing 10 through inlets 11, 12 and after traversing the gauze 8 passes through a filter 10 before traversing said annular passage from which the purified air enters the head 7 of column 5. Reflux passes from said column through a vertical duct 18, Fig. 2, to the head of column 6 which is thermally connected to the cold head of a gas refrigerator. |
