[Also in Division D1] A method for the thermal fixation of tows of synthetic fibrous material comprises passing the tow through a vertically oriented, partly pervious and partly impervious shaft, the arrangement being such that the tow successively undergoes preheating at the top of the shaft by air transmitted from a cooling zone at the bottom of the shaft, thermal fixation by hot air below the preheating zone and finally cooling by cold air prior to the tow leaving the bottom of the shaft. The tow is fed into the shaft 1 by rollers 16 mounted on a carriage 15 which reciprocates to and fro on rails 24. The shaft consists of two walls 2, part pervious and part impervious, joined by two side walls. The pervious sections 3, 4, 5 are formed by systems of vertical rods. In the heating box 7 air is circulated by ventilator 8 and heated by elements 9. Ventilator 12 passes the cold air through shaft 1, and the warm air thus obtained, through channel 13 to the top of the shaft and thence to outlet 14. A temperature regulation mechanism is provided. A nozzle is provided above the shaft to lead away vapours from the water and finishing agents in the tow. Specifications 919,582 and 917,963 are referred to.
