A composition for increasing the yield of food plants comprises a quinone or reduced quinone and an adhesive. Specified quinones &c. are substituted orthoquinones, substituted hydroxyquinones, substituted hydroxy-p-quinones capable of reacting tautomerically as hydroxy-o-quinones and substituted hydroquinones; thymolhydroquinone, 1.2.4.5.8-pentahydroxyanthraquinone, 1.2.5.8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone, 1.2.4.5.6.8-hexahydroxyanthraquinone, 1.4-dihydroxyanthraquinone, 1.2-anthrasenequinone, 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-1.4-naphtha quinone, 3.5-ditertiarybutyl-o-benzoquinone, 2.5-ditertiarybutyl-hydroquinone and 3.5-ditertiarybutyl-pyrocatechin. Specified adhesives are natural oils, synthetic neutral waxes or lanolin. The compositions may be applied to the soil as solids, as solutions or suspensions if desired with fertilizers, or they may be applied to plants, if desired with protection agents or wetting agents. In the examples 10-100 mg. of the above-specified adhesives were used with 100 ccs. of solution &c. containing 25 per cent of the quinone substance.
