A copolymer of 40-80 per cent of a higher alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, wherein the alkyl radical has at least 12 carbon atoms, and acrylic or methacrylic acid, is used in the production of low-adhesion coatings on films. The (meth)acrylic acid can be replaced in part by acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. Coating may be effected from organic solution or aqueous emulsion. In an example, octadecyl acrylate and acrylic acid in the weight ratio 3 : 2 are dissolved in ethyl acetate, oxygen is removed, a small quantity of benzoyl peroxide is added, and the mixture polymerized at a temperature increasing from 50 DEG to 71 DEG C. To prevent gelation, a little water may then be added. For the production of an aqueous dispersion, there is added to the ethyl acetate solution, propanol and water, and a relatively small amount of p morpholine. The organic solvents are then distilled off under vacuum.
