Benzophenone derivatives are prepared by the following routes: (R = optional halogen, CF 3 ; X1,2 = halogen). The products of these processes may be acylated by reaction with an α-haloalkanoyl halide and the resulting amide may be reacted with ammonia to replace the halogen atom in the side chain by an amino group. The product of the second process may also be acetylated. Compounds of the general formula (R3 = C 1-7 alkyl) are hypnotics, sedatives, psychosedatives, anticonvulsants and muscle relaxants, and may be administered in the form of pharmaceutical preparations containing them in association with a carrier.
