A catalyst carrier has incorporated therein a second material which may be removed in a number of specified ways to give a carrier of micropores less than 100 and at least 10 percent of the total pore volume of the catalyst being composed by access channels having diameters of 100-1000 and the remainder constituting 10 to 20 percent of the total pore volume having access channels with diameters greater than 1000.
