Zusammenfassung: | 1319719 Testing nuclear fuel elements GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 22 July 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 34342/71 Heading G6C Moisture, hydrogen, and hydrocarbon impurities are detected in a nuclear fuel element by including in the fuel can a Zr-Ni-Ti alloy, heating the element, e.g. at 200-650 C. so that the alloy reacts with the moisture and other impurities, and examining the element by neutron radiography to locate the presence and position of hydrogen compounds. The alloy will also react with CO, CO 2 , O 2 , and N 2 present in the element. Portions of the alloy may be associated in thin sheet form with a hold-down spring inside a Zircaloy-clade ceramic fuel element. The impurities may be removed completely by further heating. Specification 1,319,720 is referred to. |
