METHOD OF MAKING COPOLYMERS SOLUBLE IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS

1312494 Adhesive coating REICHHOLDALBERT-OHEMIE AG 3 Dec 1970 [8 Dec 1969 4 May 1970] 57441/70 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 B6 and C3] Fusion adhesives comprise a copolymer of (a) 1-20% of a nitrile of an α, #-ethylenically unsaturated mono or dicarboxylic acid or a mixture of such nitriles (b) 1-20% of an amide of such an acid or a mixture of amides (c) 40-97% of an ester of such an acid with a C 4 -C 12 alcohol or a mixture of esters and (d) 1-30% of methyl methacrylate. In examples copolymers of acrylonitrile, acrylamide, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate are formed by a solution technique. The adhesives preferably contain formaldehyde or a precursor thereof, e.g. paraformaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine to induce cross-linking on heating. The adhesives are used for (a) cementing together PVC or polyester sheets, (b) applying as a contact adhesive to a textile floor covering being covered with a silicone paper removed before use, (c) applying to a bituminous felt for application to car doors, silicone paper again being used as a temporary covering; (d) applying to one side of a soda paper, the other side being coated with a silicone antiadhesive layer and the paper rolled, (e) applying to one side of a moulded fibre board to which is then applied a coloured decorative sheet, (f) applying, from a silicone paper, to a non-woven polypropylene fabric which is then cemented to aluminium sheet.
