A passenger carrying pod 11 is slidablymounted on the guide posts by rollers 59, 60 so as to be movable vertically by the action of driven screw columns 91, 109 engaging nuts 102 held captive in the pod. Fairings 79, 80 accommodate the posts when the pod is lowered in which position it is supported on springs 132 since the slight axial freedom of the nuts 102 in their housings in the pod allow the screws 91, 109 to be relieved of load.
