The tool insert comprises a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride, PCBN, composite material with a textured surface layer on the stirring pin and/or on the shoulder. The textured surface layer comprises a pre-defined repeating pattern. The textured surface layer provides enhanced mechanical coupling between the tool insert and a workpiece.
