RETRIEVABLE PACKER

A retrievable packer device for use in a wellbore comprises upper and lower end rings (10, 12) configured to be mounted on a base pipe (8) and a deformable sleeve (14) extending between the end rings. A swellable sleeve (16) is mounted on the deformable sleeve. The lower end of sleeve (14) is movably received in recess (32) of lower end ring, forming a chamber (36) between sleeve (14) and base pipe (8). Seal (50) on end ring (12) seals against sealing area (56) on lower end of sleeve (14). For retrieval a pulling force is exerted on base pipe (8) axially compressing swellable sleeve (16). Deformable sleeve (14) flexes inwardly and lower end (30) is withdrawn from recess (32) whereby the sealing engagement (50, 56) is broken and a fluid path is established beween the outside of the packer and chamber (36) so that fluid can be vented from the chamber, which allows further flexing of sleeve (14).
