The method (60) includes placing (62) a handheld field maintenance tool (52) in the potential location (30) and causing the handheld field maintenance tool (52) to identify wireless field devices (10) within communicative range of the potential location (30). Information related to wireless communication at a potential location (30) is viewed. Methods (70, 250) are also provided for identifying a selected field device in a process installation using a handheld field maintenance tool (52).
