COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR PURIFYING NUCLEIC ACIDS FROM STABILIZATION REAGENTS

The present invention provides methods for isolating nucleic acids (DNA, RNA or a combination thereof) from a test sample comprising: (a) contacting a pellet obtained from a test sample that is stabilized with a cationic detergent with a Solubilization Solution; (b) contacting the test sample from step (a) with a Lysis Solution to create an isolation sample;(c) in the case of RNA, contacting the isolation sample to a solid support such that the RNA in the isolation sample binds to the solid support; or in the case of DNA, contacting the isolation sample with either (i) a Binding Solution, or (ii) a wash solution to create a binding sample; (d) washing the solid support with one or more Wash Solutions to remove materials other than bound nucleic acid; and (e) eluting the bound nucleic acid from the solid support in order to obtain the nucleic acid. Formulations for solubilizing a material containing nucleic acids and a kit for isolating RNA, DNA, or both are also provided.
