The torsion mechanism (11) of the hood assist system (10) is mounted distant from a pivot axis (17) of the hood (14). The torsion mechani sm (11) is engaged to the vehicle (15) in a manner which allows the torsion mechanism (11) to be mounted distant from the hood pivot axis (17) and reduc es the stresses imparted to the torsion mechanism (11) when the hood is pivoted .
