Zusammenfassung:	According to the invention, a security document (110, 202) of an undetermine d size within a range of sizes is processed by capturing images corresponding to at least one surface thereof with use of document reading apparatus (112) having a controller (532) and at least one imaging assembly (516, 517, 519). In one method of the invention, controller (532) searches through the captur ed image data to locate an identification code symbol which may have been forme d on a surface of the document. If a symbol (208) is found that satisfies a predetermined criteria for being an identification code symbol, then the symbol (208) is decoded, and the identification code for the document is utilized to control further processing of the document. Further processing subroutines of the document (110, 202) may include subroutines for verifying that the document is authentic, subroutines for validating the document, and subroutines for voiding the document.
