Zusammenfassung:An extrusion system utilizes single (30) or tandem extruders (102) and (103) and a mixer-cooler (104) to extrude a foamable extrudate through a die (37) in a sealable chamber. The foamable extrudate is shaped a nd calibrated within the chamber. The die (37) is mounted on the end of a gel tube (120) projecting through a gland seal in a fixed bulkhead (36) forming the upstream end of the chamber (40). The gel tube (120) and mixer-cooler (104) are mounted on. a movable carriage, movement of which may be used to adjust the die (37) with respect to the shaping and calibrating equipment inside the chamber. The mix er- cooler (104) achieves a selected narrow range of uniform viscosity of the melt at the die (37) depending on the size of the product a nd density. The mixer-cooler (104) enables a large size low density product to be produced with uniform cellular structure without collapse or density gradients, as the product is subjected to pressure and temperature transformations passing from the chamber to atmosphere throu gh the water.
