Herein disclosed is a vacuum cleaner comprising a housing having a filter chamber, an opening to receive one end of a vacuum hose and suction means for establishi ng a vacuum in the hose to deliver air therein to the filter chamber, an outlet for delivering exhaust air from the filter chamber, the housing having a lower section, the outlet being directed to th e lower section, wherein the lower section and the outlet are operable to form a cushion of air benea th the vacuum, the lower section having a peripheral region with a vacuum passage located therein, th e passage being in fluid communication with both the peripheral region and the filter chamber, wherei n the suction means is operable to establish a vacuum in the vacuum passage.
