Zusammenfassung:A scaleable or adaptive communications device (31) or gateway for serving as a bridge (20) between a local area network (LAN) (30) and a wide area network (WAN) (28). In one preferred embodiment of the invention the LAN takes the form of a segment of a power line carrier (PLC) (32) as defined by transformers on either end. A communications device (31) for serving as a gateway between an LAN (30) and a WAN (28) which is capable of being enhanced to expand the gateway to undertake higher level functions, including computing analyzing and transmitting collected data to achieve a variety of preprogrammed objectives.
