The invention also relates to novel lyophilized or spray-dried erythropoietin compositions comprising a .beta.- or .gamma.-cyclodextrin hydroxyalkyl derivative, to processes for preparing such aqueous, lyophilized or spray-dried compositions and to a method for simultaneously stabilizing erythropoietin in an aqueous solution and preventing it from being adsorbed to surfaces.
