The compositions may comprise an ophthalmical- ly acceptable, liquid aqueous medium and, included therein, an effective preserving or disinfecting amount of an ophthalmically acceptable quaternary ammonium substituted matrix material, the matrix material being selected from the group consisting of proteinaceous materials, carbohydrate materials and mixtures thereof.
