The process includes the steps of adjusting the pH of the cyanide-containing solution to between about pH 6 and about pH 9.5, volatilizing the HCN contained in the pH adjusted solution and contacting the volatilized HCN with basic material. Preferably, the cyanide recovery process is performed on tailings slurries resulting from metal recovery processes.
