Useful as an intermediate in the preparation of cephalosporin derivatives (antibacterial agents) having a 5,6-dialkanoyl-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl group such as 5,6-dihydroxy-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl or 5,6diacetoxy-2-methylisoindoliniomethyl, at the 3-position of the cephen nucleus.
