Zusammenfassung:An improved phosphonic acid catalyst is disclosed for the hydration of olefins and the process of preparing it is also disclosed. The improvement relates to the carrier used which consists of an essentially montmorillonitecontaining clay, containing up 0.5% K2O, treated with acid in a first stage to an A12O3 content of 13-18% and a surface area of 200-400 m2/g, followed by adjustment of water content and compacting, calcining and a second acid treatment stage to an A12O3 content of 1-5%, the treated clay having a surface area of 150-250 m2/g. This treated clay is then impregnated with phosphoric acid.
