There is disclosed apparatus for cooling coke including a cooling chamber 1, two coke outlets 3 and 4 and a distributor floor 2 comprising two inclined floor sections 2' and 2" rising towards the centre of the cooling chamber. Each floor section has a plurality of gas outlets 6 through which cooling gas may flow distributed over the entire cross-section of the chamber and associated in two or more groups, each of which is connected to a respective gas supply chamber 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11 associated with respective control means 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 for regulating the gas flow.
