Zusammenfassung:An electromagnetic arc extinction apparatus for switchgear comprises an arc chamber made of an electrically insulating material and having an axial channel. There are two electrodes arranged in axial relationship to the axis of the arc chamber and adapted to form an arc having a helical shape. To provide for movement of the arc in a radial direction, the arc chamber defines a helical cavity whose pitch is at least 10 times smaller than the diameter of the arc chamber measured over its cross-section. In the apparatus of the invention, the helical arc has a small pitch with the result that the associated switchgear offers small overall dimensions and can handle high voltages.
