Composition comprises one or more finely ground silicon dioxide powder having an average particle size of 2-100 nm with a BET surface area of at least 30 m 2>/g, one or more granular components selected from oxides, carbides and nitrides having an average particle size of less than 0.5 mu m to 30 mm, one or more carbonaceous binders and/or carbon and one or more antioxidants having an average particle size of less than 0.5 to 250 mu m. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Method for the production of a ceramic or refractory molded body made from the above composition; and (2) Molded body produced by the above process.
