The web (1) is delivered from a knitting machine to a winding drum (14,14') driven by an axle drive system (13,25-29) whose rotation speed is controlled by sensors (7,9,10) measuring web tension. A take-off roll (15) for the web is located at the position (16) where the web is taken up by the winding drum. The distance between the roll and drum is kept constant by moving them relative to each other along a radial guide. The take-off roll may be guided radially outwards with the incremental diameter of the winding drum.
