The present invention relates to a process for reducing or completely stopping the inflow of water into a deposit in at least a part of a borehole, traversing a deposit, for the production of oil and/or hydrocarbon gas, wherein, starting from the borehole, a solution of a polymer is introduced into that part of the deposit where the water inflows are to be reduced or stopped, and the borehole is then put into operation for the production of oil or hydrocarbon gas, the fluids present in the deposit coming into contact with the said, polymer-containing part of the deposit and the oil and/or hydrocarbon gas flowing through this part of the deposit and passing into the borehole, characterised in that the non-aqueous solution of the hydrophobic, water-insoluble polymer is introduced into the deposit, and the polymer precipitates in the presence of the connate water of the deposit.
