An applicator for a machine for pre-assembling and assembling the toe portion comprising two front sections 10, 110, rotatable about a common pivot pin 12, 112 and two extensions 16, 116 each mounted on the associated section 10, 110. A single adjusting device 18, 118 is envisaged for adjusting the relative positions of the various parts, said device being able to position the front sections 10, 110 and simultaneously and proportionally determine the positions of the extensions 116. Instruments for independent adjustment of the extensions 16, 116 are also envisaged, and the abovementioned proportion may be varied as required by means of a relatively simple adjustment 36, 72, 100.
