Sulfoanilides of the formula in which R represents alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, chloroalkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and up to 6 chlorine atoms, optionally substituted aryl or the group of the formula R and R are identical or different and represent alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or R and R , together with the adjacent nitrogen atom, represent a saturated or unsaturated heterocyclic ring which can also contain other heteroatoms, R represents alkoxy having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, optionally substituted phenoxy, alkylthio having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, alkenylthio having up to 6 carbon atoms, alkylsulphonylaminoalkylthio having 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkylsulphonyl group and 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, optionally substituted phenylthio, thiocyanato or the group of the formula -S(O)nR , in which R represents alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, haloalkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and up to 6 halogen atoms, optionally substituted phenyl or optionally substituted benzyl and n represents 1 or 2, R represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, haloalkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and up to 6 halogen atoms, but not 2-trifluoromethyl if R represents methyl or chloromethyl and R simultaneously represents methylthio, methylsulphinyl or methylsulphonyl in the para-position, and R furthermore represents nitro or the group of the formula -NH-CO-NH-R , in which R represents alkyl having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and R represents hydrogen or halogen, have strong herbicidal properties.u
