São divulgados inibidores de dissulfeto-isomerase A4 (PDIA4) e seu uso relacionado para inibir a patogênese de células ß pancreáticas e tratar diabetes. Os fármacos em desenvolvimento que inibem PDIA4 com valores de IC50 variando de 4 µM a 300 nM são identificados. Os compostos são altamente ativos no aumento da secreção de insulina das células ß pancreáticas. O composto representativo nº 8 (ácido 4,5-dimetóxi-2-propiolamidobenzóico), sozinho ou em combinação com metformina, é eficaz na preservação da função das células ß pancreáticas, tratando e/ou revertendo e retornando a concentração de glicose no sangue a um nível normal em um diabético.
