Zusammenfassung:	Methods of extending the shelf life and vitality of sugarcane stem sections are disclosed. Coated sugarcane stem sections are also disclosed. In one exemplary embodiment, the method of extending the shelf life and vitality of a sugarcane stem section comprises coating at least a portion of the sugarcane stem section with a coating composition comprising at least one additive selected from: silver nitrate, silver acetate, silver thiosulfate, potassium ferrocyanide, and potassium ferricyanide so as to form a coated sugarcane stem section.
