Heading C2C. 4,41 - Bipyridyl is prepared by reacting pyridine, an aliphatic acid anhydride and zinc in the presence of an inorganic acid or BF 3 , and oxidizing the N,N1-diacyl-tetrahydro-4,41- bipyridyl so obtained to 4,41-bipyridyl in the presence of a dehydrogenating catalyst, using a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent. Preferably an alkyl acetate is present in the reaction mixture. A suitable dehydrogenating catalyst is palladium or charcoal. Quaternary dialkyl- 4,41-bipyridylium salts are obtained by reacting the bipyridyl prepared as above with a dialkyl sulphate.
