A filter press for separating wort from mash comprises an endless filter band 22 extending in zigzag manner through a vertical stack of alternate plates 14 and frames 21, which are clamped together during filtering and subsequently separated to enable the band to be moved to discharge filter cake. Each plate comprises a horizontal dividing sheet 18 and upper and lower band-supporting sieves 16 and 17, so that when conduit 34 supplies mash slurry to frames 21, filtrate flows upwards and downwards through respective sections of band 22 into the lower and upper cavities of adjacent plates and thence to conduit 35. Subsequently valves 38 are closed, and conduit 36 delivers sparging water to lower cavities only, to flow through the mash cake in the frames below into the upper cavities of the next plates down and thence to conduit 35. In Figures 11, 12 (not shown) two stacks of plates and frames cooperate with a single filter band between common end plates 3 and 4.
