Zusammenfassung:Polycrystals of wartzitic boron nitride are prepared by hot pressing a mixt. contg. as one of its components, boron nitride of wurtzite structure with a high proportion of defects, obtd. by use of a shock wave, together with at least 50 wt.% of graphitic boron nitride, also treated by shock wave but without becoming transformed, in the region of the boron nitride equilibrium diagram limited by the equilibrium curves of the graphite dense material transition and the wurtzite/cubic transition. The polycrystals although hard and suitable for cutting tools, retain sufficient plasticity to be less subject to shock damage.
