1350237 Prostaglandin derivatives UPJOHN CO 19 April 1971 [9 March 1970] 22022/71 Heading C2C Prostaglandin derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 is H, C 1-8 alkyl, or a pharmacologically acceptable cation, a is 0 or 1, n is 2 to 8, m is 1 to 5 and # indicates attachment of OH to the ring in alpha or beta-configuration with the provisos that the compound contains 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22 carbon atoms exclusive of R 1 , and that the chain does not contain 7 carbon atoms exclusive of and when a is 0 m is not 4, which are novel when the OH group is in the beta configuration, are prepared by carbonyl reduction of the corresponding PGE 1 or PGE 2 acids or esters, followed by, if desired, separation of the α- and #-isomers thus obtained. The novel esters may also be obtained by esterification of the corresponding free acids. Pharmaceutical compositions, suitable for oral parenteral, rectal or topical administration, contain the above novel compounds with pharmaceuticably acceptable carriers. The compounds possess pharmacological activities similar to those of the natural prostaglandins.
