Zusammenfassung:This invention relates to a fuel combustion system (10) for a lean burn internal combustion engine (12). Because of the lean fuel/air ratio, it is difficult to consistently achieve complete and thorough combustion within the main combustion chamber (28) because of the relatively slow rate of flame propagation. The subject fuel combustion system (10) includes a precombustion chamber assembly (37) defining a prechamber (52) having a preselected shape and volume and includes a plurality of ejection passages (132). The passages (132) are of a preselected geometric cross-section for directing and controllably expanding burning gases from the prechamber (52) into the main combustion chamber (28) at a velocity greater than the speed of sound in order to penetrate and cause igniting and burning in the main combustion chamber (28) for faster and more complete combustion.
