Apparatus for determining the position of the cutting head of a boring or mining machine, characterised by a sensor (8), which is oriented relative to the longitudinal axis of the drift and which may be mounted in a drift a transmitter (6) for transmitting electromagnetic radiation in the wave-length range of 1 mu m to 10 cm on the cutting head (4) and/or on a cutting arm (3), and a telemeter for determining the distance (r) of at least one reference point on the cutting head (4) and/or cutting arm from the sensor (8), and preferably an indicator (12) for indicating the position of the cutting head (4) relative to a required profile (14) to be cut.
