The formal structure of the document (19) is displayed in one or more graphic arrays of nested rectangular elements in three-dimensional relief (21). A first rectangular element (24) overlying a second rectangular element (21) represents the corresponding first element in the formal structure definition of the document being nested within the corresponding second element in the formal structure definition of the document. Each rectangular element comprises an icon (26) which represents the characteristics of the corresponding element in the formal structure definition of the document.
