System for display of structured documents

An interactive system for the display of a document having a formal structure definition and content in which there is a logical editor which may accept user input. The logical editor displays a portion of a representation of the formal structure definition of the document on a first distinct predefined region of a display means (19). The system has a content editor which processes user input and responds to the user input by displaying a portion of a representation of the document content in a second distinct predefined region of the display (20). The formal structure of the document (19) is displayed in one or more graphic arrays of nested rectangular elements in three-dimensional relief (21). A first rectangular element (24) overlying a second rectangular element (21) represents the corresponding first element in the formal structure definition of the document being nested within the corresponding second element in the formal structure definition of the document. Each rectangular element comprises an icon (26) which represents the characteristics of the corresponding element in the formal structure definition of the document.
